Condolence messages in Urdu: 12 taziyat messages and duas, with Roman Urdu

By the Sitey team · · 8 min read

Twelve condolence (taziyat) messages in Urdu, each with its Roman Urdu spelling: for a friend who lost their father or mother, a colleague, your boss, an aunt who lost her husband, parents who lost a child, for when you could not reach the janaza, and one to check in a few days later, plus short duas. Below them: what the Quran and the Prophet ﷺ teach us to say, and a few things that help a grieving family more than words.

Tip: press and hold a message to copy it. For a woman who has passed away, write «marhooma» (مرحومہ) instead of «marhoom». If a woman sends the janaza message, «pohanch saka» becomes «pohanch saki» and «aaun ga» becomes «aaun gi».

Condolence messages and duas, by who you are writing to

For a friend who lost their father

Aap ke walid sahab ke intiqal ki khabar sun kar bohat dukh hua. Allah un ki maghfirat farmaye aur aap ko aur ghar walon ko sabr de. Main aap ke saath hoon.

I was so sorry to hear of your father's passing. May Allah forgive him and give you and your family patience. I am with you.

For a friend who lost their mother

Aap ki walida ke intiqal ka sun kar dil bohat udaas hai. Maa ka saaya uth jana bohat bara sadma hai. Allah unhein Jannat ul Firdaus mein jagah de. Ameen.

My heart is heavy hearing of your mother's passing. Losing a mother's shade is a huge loss. May Allah give her a place in Jannat al-Firdaus. Ameen.

For a close friend, short

Yaar, bohat afsos hua. Kisi bhi cheez ki zaroorat ho to bas aik call kar dena. Allah tumhein himmat de.

So sorry, my friend. If you need anything at all, just call. May Allah give you strength.

For a colleague

Aap ke aziz ke intiqal par dili taziyat qabool kijiye. Allah marhoom ki maghfirat farmaye aur aap ko sabr-e-jameel ata kare.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your loved one. May Allah forgive the departed and grant you beautiful patience.

For your boss, from the office

Mohtaram, aap ke ghar hone wale saaneh ka sun kar nihayat afsos hua. Hum sab daftar wale aap ke gham mein barabar ke shareek hain. Allah marhoom ke darajat buland farmaye.

Respected sir, we were deeply saddened to hear of your loss. All of us at the office share your grief. May Allah raise the ranks of the departed.

For an aunt who lost her husband

Phuppo jaan, Phupha jaan ke jaane ka bohat dukh hai. Woh hum sab ka bohat khayal rakhte thay. Allah un ki qabr ko noor se bhar de aur aap ko sabr de.

Phuppo, we are so sad that Phupha jaan is gone. He cared for all of us so much. May Allah fill his grave with light and give you patience.

For parents who lost a child

Is dukh ke liye koi alfaz nahin. Allah aap ke nanhe farishte ko jannat mein rakhe aur aap dono ke dilon ko sukoon de.

There are no words for this pain. May Allah keep your little angel in Jannah and bring peace to both your hearts.

When you could not reach the janaza

Maazrat ke main janaze mein nahin pohanch saka. Dil aap ke saath hai aur aap sab duaon mein hain. Jald milne aaun ga, InshaAllah.

I'm sorry I couldn't reach the janaza. My heart is with you and you are all in my prayers. I will come to see you soon, InshaAllah.

A few days later, to check in

Bas yeh poochna tha ke aap kaise hain. Jawab ki zaroorat nahin, bas itna jaan lein ke hum aap ko yaad kar rahe hain aur dua kar rahe hain.

Just wanted to ask how you are. No need to reply; just know we are thinking of you and praying for you.

Short, with Inna lillahi

Indeed we belong to Allah, and to Him we return. May Allah forgive the departed and give the family patience.

A short dua

Allah marhoom ke darajat buland farmaye aur un ki qabr ko jannat ka bagh banaye. Ameen.

May Allah raise the ranks of the departed and make their grave a garden of Paradise. Ameen.

A short dua

Dili taziyat. Allah aap ko aur aap ke ghar walon ko yeh sadma sehne ki himmat de.

Heartfelt condolences. May Allah give you and your family the strength to bear this loss.

What the Quran and the Sunnah teach us to say

  • Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. The Quran describes the patient as those who, when a disaster strikes them, say: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:156).
  • Whatever Allah takes is His. When the Prophet's ﷺ daughter sent for him as her child was dying, he sent her his salaam and these words: whatever Allah takes is His, whatever He gives is His, and everything with Him has a fixed term, so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 1284). In the same hadith he wept, and called his tears a mercy Allah puts in the hearts of His servants: grief is not a lack of faith.

A few things that help more than words

  • Send it to them, not to the big group. A short private message reads as yours; a line in a busy group gets lost between the other replies.
  • Keep it short and say their name, or the name of the one who passed. Skip forwarded pictures and poems.
  • Don't ask how it happened. If they want to tell you, they will.
  • Offer one real thing: food for the family, picking relatives up from the station, keeping the children for an afternoon. “Let me know if you need anything” is kind; a specific offer is easier to accept.
  • Write again a week later. The calls stop after the first days; a short message then means a lot.
